All change for the team formally known as qoroz

15/12/11

The Under 23 team run by South West Bike Academy, formally Team qoroz, is undergoing major changes for 2012.

After being sponsored by Qoroz Titanium bikes for three years, major changes will take effect from the end of the year. The Under 23 team, that had such a successful and high profile 2011 season, has formed a partnership with Elite French-American based squad, Equipe CMI. This partnership forms a strong pan European set-up that will undertake an extensive and exciting race calendar that includes UCI stage races, as well as a full UK programme.

Team manager David Walters commented "The partnership with CMI will allow the young riders from the UK to develop their skills and understanding of what it takes to succeed in the sport alongside experienced and high quality European teammates, in a wide-ranging race calendar."

Chris Davies of qoroz commented; "The relationship between the Academy and qoroz has been incredibly beneficial for both parties, and their input has helped bring the qoroz race product up to the high level it is now. The youngsters on the squad have represented us professionally and with commitment, and have achieved great things with our considerable support, notably winning Perfs Pedal last season. Onwards and upwards for all."

qoroz would like to thank the team for their commitment, support and feedback over the last three years, having played a fundamental part in the development and testing of the Race Won.

Dean Downing trains on a qoroz Mountain Won over the winter

08/12/11

Dean Downing went to Morocco with Alistair Cope of Velo Ventures in October. He borrowed a qoroz Mountain Won for his 7-day traverse across the edge of the High Atlas Mountains. During that time, he tested it on all sorts of terrain from rocky single track, fast dirt roads and tricky sandy paths. Added to that, he forded rivers, climbed up to 3000m and encountered cacti at close quarters! Alistair said: "It was without doubt one of our best tours, a fantastic bunch of riders that all just loved biking. Deano quickly became one of the gang, and we all had so much fun!"

Dean loved it so much that, on his return, he asked Chris Davies of qoroz if he could use the same MTB to train on throughout the winter. "Mountain Biking" said Dean, "is always great fun in the winter and pretty good for my fitness, I had a great time out in Morocco back in October with Alistair of Velo Ventures and the qoroz bike was great at handling the tough mountain terrain. Thanks to the guys at qoroz I can now use it through the winter and put it through its paces again."

Looking at the state of the Mountain Won when it came back from Morocco (covered in red dirt and shredded rear tyre), Chris knew Dean would put the MTB through its paces over the Christmas break. Chris said: "Alistair is one of our qoroz ambassadors and we were delighted to offer Dean our Mountain Won for his trip to Morocco. When I got the bike back I could see Dean had had a great time. Dean got in contact and explained he was looking for a MTB to train on over the winter. Having someone like Dean use our Mountain Won will prove if it's as strong as we believe it to be. It'll be interesting to see what's left of our Mountain Won when I get it back at the end of February."

Maria, riding a qoroz Race Won, beats James Cracknell's team

30/08/11

"When we rolled up at the start line of day 2, James Cracknell almost fell off his bike when he saw what I was riding. At the end of the day he knew he was in serious trouble as he'd only managed to take 20 seconds from us on the morning road bike section! Thanks qoroz, we couldn't have done it without your support!"

The Adidas Terrex Coast to Coast Adventure Race finished yesterday, Bank Holiday Monday, and the Team event was won by Team Accelerate which comprised on brothers Dan & Matt Halliday and Maria Leijerstam.

It involved running, cycling, kayaking and swimming the width of the UK and Team Accelerate did so in an impressive 19hrs and 20 minutes, winning by almost an hour. Second place were previous Adventure Racing World Champions Team Adidas Terrex including Olympic Gold Medalist turned adventure racer James Cracknell.

The rules of the race meant that two people from each team of three would race at any one time and Team Accelerate, captained by Dan Halliday, took some very smart decisions around this. The Halliday brothers are amongst the best mountain runners in the country and hence they always took on the mountain running sections whilst Maria Leijerstam was able to offer her strength in the kayaking and road biking sections. "At no point did we hold each other back as we had planned the race and bike choice perfectly" said Team Accelerate.

The race starting in the sea at Whitehaven in the Lake District and finished at Robin Hood Bay in the North East on foot. The route followed the traditional Wainwright C2C, but instead of walking it over a leisurely 7 days, these athletes did it in 4 days. Each day was broken up into 4 or 5 phases with some very fast transitions between each phase. Each Team has a support crew who would transport all of their kit from transition to transition and get food, gels, drinks, kit and clothes ready for the next leg.

James Bowthorpe rides again!

07/06/11

Round the world man becomes window dressing for 24 hours!

Have you ever seen someone give a talk after they've been cycling for 24 hours non-stop? Here's your chance.

James Bowthorpe will be cycling for 24 hours straight in the window of Look Mum No Hands! on Old Street, starting at 7.30pm on Wednesday 15th of June and finishing at 7.30pm on Thursday 16th June. He is aiming to ride 300 miles in the 24 hour period. James will be riding a qoroz road bike on a specially adapted training platform provided by Rollapaluza; a giant LED display in the window will show time and distance elapsed... can he manage it in time?

The start date is no coincidence - in one year's time James will be starting the Race Across America, a non-stop 3000 mile race with a time limit of 12 days. He'll need to be able to repeat this 24 hour feat 10 times with 1 hour sleep each day.

Please come along to cheer him on and countdown the final 30 minutes from 7pm on Thursday 16th June. Afterwards, James will give a brief and breathless presentation of his plans for the next 12 months, including a non-stop race across America, several non-stop mountain bike adventures in the UK and a multi-stop adventure down the Hudson River.

Since his record breaking 'round the world ride in 2009 James has been busy. Busy building things, making a short film with a Mogwai soundtrack, guiding 25 cyclists from John O'Groats to Land's End whilst feasting on local food, training for Paris-Brest-Paris and the Race Across America, writing articles for The Rig Out, Boneshaker Magazine and The Ride, and catching up with correspondence. He hasn't done a talk for a while and after this one... well, who knows when the next will be?
